Umbraco compatible with Google Chrome

Tuesday, September 02, 2008 by Administrator

Just took the sparkling new browser from Google - Chrome - for a spin in the umbraco UI and it works as expected - perfectly. I was able to browse the tree, use the right click menu and edit using the tabs and all the existing controls including WYSIWYG without problems. This once again proves that even though umbraco has one of the most advanced UIs in the world of Web CMS, we're also one of the most cross-platform/browser compatible Web CMS's.

Umbraco.org in Google Chrome

Google Chrome is an insanely *fast* browser. Umbraco really excells and load times and rendering of different views is really, really fast. I'm very excited to finally see a browser that hits the market made by people who actually develops apps and sites for browsers. This browser is much more "invisible" than any other browser, leaving space and screen estate to what matters, the apps and sites you're using.

This blog post is written in umbraco 3.0.3 using Google Chrome, so that's a living proof that it works. Umbraco 4 looks and performs even more stunning with Chrome.

UPDATE: There's tree quirks in Chrome (and Safari) as reported in the comments. It'll be fixed for Umbraco 4. Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks for the heads-up, exiting times ahead. Looking forward to trying Chrome once the Mac version is ready.

    Guys,

    This looks a bit worrying

I tried it for a day with Umbraco and found a few problems with right-clicking on the tree in Umbraco v4 - for example, it was not possible to delete a Template (sometimes, the right-click menu brought up the popup menu as if you had clicked on a different, parent node)

Ismail - Eula has been updated now.

It is really fast! however, there are a few things that don't work such as trying to change a property type of a document type, the drop down list doesn't expand.

I can concur Adz comment - accidently deleted a whole parent node last night using chrome.

Could the tree bugs be v4 bugs rather than v4 on Chrome bugs??

  8. Gravatar ImageOvertyr Says:

Sure Google Chrome is fast. The interface is nice (and similar to IE). Rendering seems standard compliant.

Still, web developer have to ask themselves: What use do I have for it when there is no Bugzilla? :)

I just installed version 3.0.3 and can confirm that there are problems with the right click menu.

  10. Gravatar ImagePaul Says:

Since Chrome is based on WebKit, it has the same issues as Safari. Umbraco has never worked well with Safari, particularly with regards to the tree, which is pretty much unusable.

It seems that the tree needs to be fixed to work with WebKit the way that it does with IE and FF.

I would start bragging about the cross platform-ness of Umbraco. Especially considering that Wordpress, TXP, Expression Engine, Movable Type and a million other CMS's have non-JS UIs that allow full control of every aspect of the Admin even in outdated browsers like IE 4 and Netscape 2. Umbraco has problems in every browser except IE. It should be the other way around.

The big problem I have with Umbraco is the forced height, double scrollbar elements in the UI because of the JS controlling everything. Why can't we have a semantically marked-up admin without the right click and forced height garbage?

  12. Gravatar Imageqrayg Says:

That should be "I WOULDN'T start bragging...".

  13. Gravatar Imageeatme Says:

    i second qrayg's call.

it really detracts from your credibility when you claim your software does things that it doesn't.

i also note umbraco claimed firefox compatibility for ages when in fact there where many serious bugs (and there still are a few)

Thanks for the feedback, y'all! I'll update the blog post. I didn't discover the tree bug because I had already the page where I created the new item below open. It's a bug and we'll get that one fixed for 4.

@grayg: We also *really* want to re-write the UI to be fully valid html, but it works so it hasn't been on the top of the list. We'll keep most of the UI metaphors when we re-write though including the right click as we think it offers a very clean and efficient UI. Also, remember that umbraco is a generic wcms as opposed to WordPress that's a blogging application with a pre-fixed purpose. And I do think it's valid that we brag; We got a single cosmetic bug left in Umbraco 4 to fully support FF and that'll be fixed. The problems you're mentioning is v3 related. The Umbraco back office is an application - not a website - so other conventions does apply. I would never produce a website the way I produced umbraco and the other way around. Even though they're both based on the same set of tools and languages, their purpose is very different.

@eatme: Good to have you back. I still remembered how you complained how we claimed umbraco worked in Firefox, but it didn't worked in your installation. Because you used an old version. If we had a troll cap function like 37Signals' svn blog, you sure deserve one ;-)

  15. Gravatar Imageeatme Says:

    > Because you used an old version

Your firefox compatibility claims (and my use of umbraco) predate Umbraco 3.0.5

No offense intended and i'm very sorry you feel i'm a troll, but the codeplex bug tracker is testament to the fact.

P.S v3.0.3 is still listed as the latest released version

Who's the dude in the upper right of the section overview on the screenshot? ;) Is that the icon for Concierge? ;p

  17. Gravatar ImagePer Ploug Hansen Says:

@simon haha no it's picture of warren buffet, who's probably one of the biggest capitalists on this planet.

It's also the icon for our store

Hartvig said: "...as opposed to WordPress that's a blogging application with a pre-fixed purpose."

To the defense of other PHP based CMS's, just because they have built-in blogging capabilities doesn't mean that is their only purpose. Wordpress, TXP, EE, etc. can all be used as blog tools but they also have the ability to create and display content without blog-like features.

I don't think the default purpose of a CMS should determine the intuitive-ness of the admin UI. All UI should be intuitive regardless of whether it was created with MS or open source technologies.

Umbraco's admin UI is definitely unique. It's not too intuitive though. People have been conditioned to never use the right mouse button on websites.

If it ain't broke, why fix it?

I do have to say that I'm definitely looking forward to v4, though. I'm really rooting for you guys to blow my socks off.

I have stopped using umbraco 3.0.3 in chrome i did experiance the tree view bug and i also noticed that when i was creating new properties in the document types i was unable to enter a name or alias. It didn't seem to reconise it as an input.

Apart from that it was very nice and its a shame i cannot use it in chrome just yet.
