Umbraco 4 Progress

Monday, September 22, 2008 by Administrator

The work of Umbraco 4 is maturing and we're getting closer to Beta 2, which is the final beta of Umbraco 4 - the feature complete version. The improvements of the past week includes:

  • Live Editing (podcast)
  • Master Document Types (screencast)
  • Document Types and Templates are now shown hierarchical in the tree view (screenshot)
  • (Much, much, much) Better markup in back office
  • Massive performance enhancements

As we're getting closer and closer, chances are that the automated nightly builds (available here) might have some quirks. After all, automated means that they get build by a machine every time the clock reaches 1am, not when we think so. That's why I've made a new category in the forum for feedback on the nightly builds as well as the specific issues that relates to Umbraco 4.

Exciting times...

BTW: At CodeGarden US here in October, Per and I will come and talk about all the cool new stuff in Umbraco 4 - you don't want to miss that, do you?

Will there be an "upgrade your umbraco 3 to umbraco 4 tool" or will this more or less be a manual process?

Upgrading is a fully automated process and in fact you're looking at an Umbraco 4 site right now. We upgraded umbraco.org from 3 to 4 without any issues.

Before we deployed we used Courier to transfer blog posts, comments and other new content from the live umbraco.org site (running version 3) to our internal test site (running version 4). So Courier can even transfer between umbraco versions, making sure that you don't loose any content while testing. Pretty sweet :-)

The screencast link for Master Document Types does not work.

Pity the screencast link doesn't work. I'd love to find out more about Umbraco & Master pages. It seems a really exiting development.

    Keep up the great work.

Like Geert Says, The screencast link for Master Document Types results in a 404. The URL is http://umbraco.org/assets/screencasts/masterDocTypes/masterDocTypes.htm. The post is currently on your home page. Not a great advertisement for your CMS. (I presume you use your own product?)

Thanks for the heads up - the link to the screencast is up again.

And sergey you're right, it's not a great advertisement. The screencast was uploaded manually and not via the cms, which is why it wasn't discovered via Courier when we synced the old content.

When will the v4 be out? We are currently evaluating open source CMS solutions for one of our clients and Umbraco looks good, except the lack of extension modules. We need to start CMS config by 10/15. Shall we work in v4 beta, or use v3 for now and then upgrade to v4 when it's out?

    Thank you.
