New Umbraco Identity

Monday, May 03, 2010 by Administrator

Today is a day that I've been looking forward to for long. We can finally reveal the new identity for Umbraco. After five years of DIY we've teamed up with the brand experts at 1508 and got a new logo, logotype, font, colors, imagery and tone of voice. The old logo by Hudson Maul have served us incredibly well, but it was time to get a cleaner and more modern look. At the same time it was also time to say adios to the old Kontrapunkt font as it really doesn't work on screen. Our new font is the gorgeous Apex New.

And without more mumbling - here's how we look now:

Basic CMYK

We're working hard on our brand new website which we hope to launch before the summer - until then be patient as we implement the new identity and please let us know if we forgot to replace the logos somewhere.

You can download the new logo and logotype as illustrator files here. Feel free to use them, but remember to ask for permission if used commercially.

Here's a couple of new desktop wallpapers (1900x1080 - more sizes will come) to start the week:

Haha that last one, is scary as hell!

It's the umbraconator sent back through time to protect the movement!

    Waargh get down! (arnold impersonation)

Am I missing something or what? The images is not in 1900x1080 when I click on them, I get the 640x364px version. Maybe something missing here?

    Good job anyway!

My bad - I had the wrong settings in LiveWriter. The images are updated and in correct sizes now!

    Love it :D

Considerably improvement with the simpler "sharper" design line, which works way better in small sizes. Good job guys!

Awesome. Love it. The captial U in "Don't Worry be Umbraco" looks odd to me :)

  6. Gravatar ImageThomas Vestergaard Says:

Oh, the umbraconator is gone now. My first comment is not funny anymore :(

I like the wallpapers :) Good job.

Quick question about the capitalization. In your logotype umbraco is spelled with a lowercase u, but when used in writing it is spelled in uppercase, as in the third picture.

It has been my interpretation that umbraco should always be in lowercase - has this changed when used in writing?

Anyway - I really like the new feel of the logo, and especially the Apex New font works really well. Congrats on your new logo :)

    Nice branding gents!

I like the general feel of "real person" vs Umbraco in the spots, but I think i would diversify and use something other than children in the pics...or am I missing the message? :)

    Love the streamlined logo though.

New logo and font is cool, but does anyone really want a massive photo of some random kid on their desktop? Bit creepy don't you think?

I like the pic makes for awesome branding... your guys will always ROCK!

  11. Gravatar ImageJonas Says:

    Great :-)
But - just boys? (My 5yr old daughter mentioned that). Perhaps we will see some imgs of future female Umbraconinjas as well?

  12. Gravatar ImageJohan Says:

*crosses fingers* hoping the new website will get rid of the mix of green/orange ;P

  13. Gravatar ImageBiagio Says:

    Funny...

  14. Gravatar ImageHartvig Says:

@Jonas: Good point. We should do something about that!

    @Johan: You'll be happy then ;)

  15. Gravatar ImageSimone Says:

Not sure if it's just a caching problem, but favicon still shows the "ears" of the U

Like the new logo, but not entirely sure about the images. Maybe as a previous post said it may be better to use something other than people. Looking at this you'd think it Is this for white males only :)

  19. Gravatar ImageRyan Maas Says:

Still the old logo with ears on the umbraco.codeplex.com site. By the by, when is 4.1 coming out???

  20. Gravatar ImageKevin Farrow Says:

Scary.... That reminds me, "Children of the Damned" is on the telly tonight :-)

  21. Gravatar ImageAbraham Says:

Yes...it is almost the same But I like it with the transparent image. it looks nice with all backgrounds.... nice work

  22. Gravatar ImageJeroen van den Brink Says:

All comments from users without an avatar also still show the old logo.

Also, you might want to update the favicon to have a transparent border instead of a white border. Looks much better that way.

    But nice though :)

Nice work of keeping it simple

Very nice, but only Illustrator files?
Since it is an open source project, why not use open source software?
