In a nutshell, Umbraco v5 is a ground-up
rebuild of your favorite CMS and is built on top of ASP.Net MVC 3. It will look the same and
have all of the same great Umbraco ideas powering the new CMS but
the underlying architecture has been completely upgraded.
The current arcitecture in Umbraco v4 - while still going strong
- is over six years old. That's a lot in internet-years. Since the
early days of Umbraco, a lot has happened both in terms of how you
work with websites and the technology powering them. We felt that
the oppotunities for making an even better Umbraco by far
outweighed keeping the old architecture. After all, we've learned
that people don't upgrade!
With v5 a new chapter will begin in the history of Umbraco,
giving us the most modern CMS architecture possible. One that makes
implementation even faster, makes it easier to integrate and
maintain content from outside Umbraco and will set new standards in
CMS flexibility. We've been working hard for the past 18 months and
we're super proud of what we're about to put in the hands of the
world's most friendly and creative community.
During CodeGarden 2011 we had a stream
dedicated to discussing & presenting Umbraco v5. If you missed
out on CodeGarden this year, or didn't get a chance to check out
all of the v5 sessions, we've recorded them all for you! Each
session contains a ton of information about Umbraco v5: what it's
all about, why it's being built from the ground up, how it's being
built and the architecture behind it: Keynote, File,New, Mvc
