uProfile July 2018: Poornima Nayar

H5YR Poornima!

Written by:

This month’s uProfile started her very first Umbraco project 7 years ago. She’s been working with Umbraco ever since. You might have seen her name pop-up on Twitter or on Our Umbraco. Maybe you even got the chance to meet her at Codegarden this year. She’s an active community member and her Umbraco enthusiasm seems to have already rubbed off on her 3 year old daughter! We are super proud to have Poornima Nayar as the July 2018 uProfile:

uProfile: Poornima Nayar

What is your favourite Umbraco moment?

I clearly remember the time when I was asked to assist building a website for a client using Umbraco back in 2011. It was terrifying because it was a huge website and there was so much to deliver in a very short time-span. It was my first Umbraco project and I had to learn and help deliver the website which was quite challenging. But the end result was amazing and I can very well say that was how I started on my journey with Umbraco.

Another special moment is when my first ever PR got merged into the core.

What in your Umbraco career are you most proud of?

Right from my first ever website which I assisted building in Umbraco to the work I am doing now. It has been an incredible journey so far and I feel there is more yet to come.

I am a part of the Umbraco PR team and that’s something that brings a smile to my face.

Another proud achievement is that my 3 year old very confidently recognizes the Umbraco logo. She loves the Umbraco t-shirts and she tells me that I should wear them a lot!

What about Umbraco keeps you coming back for more?

The community. We are a very friendly community and very original. And of course the CMS which is so versatile.

What are you currently working on?

Currently I am working with Guide Dogs for the Blind as their developer.

I am also a part of the PR team which means I try to spend some time on the PRs.

What is your top 3 best tips for an Umbraco newbie?

  • Our and the forums are your best friends.

  • Join Twitter. This could be distracting but you don’t want to miss the active community on there.

  • Attend some local meet-ups if you can (search for "Umbraco" on meetup.com). Attend Codegarden if you can.

Any aspirations for your future?

I have been weak on the contributions front. May be time to step that up. It's going to be challenging given my normal day is so busy with work and being a mummy, but I am sure I will get there.

What books are you reading right now?

I have finally realised I have grown up enough to read Harry Potter. Even though it's far from a way to relax given that I am glued to Harry Potter at the moment.

This year, I have also read some classics from Malayalam (the language spoken in Kerala, India and that’s where I am from), the novels Randamoozham and Naalukettu.
Both are works by the renowned Indian author M.T.Vasudevan Nair. While the first one left me with a tug at my heart, the second one was a different take on Mahabharatha.

Do you have a hidden talent?

That I am a singer. I used to learn Indian Classical Music in the past and now I have started my lessons again.

What’s playing on repeat on your headset?

I listen to a wide variety of music. But more than playing something on repeat on my headset it's usually me who wakes up in the morning with a song in my head and keeps singing that the whole day.

Loved by developers, used by thousands around the world!

One of the biggest benefits of using Umbraco is that we have the friendliest Open Source community on this planet. A community that's incredibly pro-active, extremely talented and helpful.

If you get an idea for something you would like to build in Umbraco, chances are that someone has already built it. And if you have a question, are looking for documentation or need friendly advice, go ahead and ask on the community forums.
