2021's Hacktoberfest is going out with a roar! It's not too late to get involved in Hacktoberfest, in fact this is the perfect time! See how to join in with Umbraco's Hacktoberfest 'Hacktober-thon'.

Could you introduce us to your initiative?

The Umbraco Hacktoberfest Hackathon (Hacktoberthon?!) is a 24 hour virtual hackathon hosted by community members around the world. It starts at 13:00 CEST on Friday 29th October and continues until 13:00 on Saturday 30th.

Candid Contributions will be starting things off from the UK, before passing over to the Skrift team in the US. Then it’s over to Australia, before returning to Europe for the final stint. So no matter what timezone you’re in, there will be some Umbracians online to accompany you in your hacking!

Why did you decide to start it?

Hackathons allow you the time to get some real contributions made, with people on hand to provide feedback and encouragement as you go. In 2020 we at Candid Contributions organised three of them. We saw many contributions made as a result, including several people making their first pull requests to Umbraco. And we had a lot of fun in the process. So it makes sense to get involved in another event!

How would you describe Hacktoberfest in 1 word?

Empowering.

What is the main focus of your initiative?

We want to provide a space where Umbracians can get together, and find support and encouragement with their Hacktoberfest contributions. If you haven’t contributed to Umbraco before, there will be people there to show you the way. There are many ways to contribute, so please don’t let any preconceptions of expected knowledge put you off.

How can people get involved?

To attend the Hackathon, we just need a couple of details from you. By filling out the form below, we can send you the Discord link you'll use to take part. (Note: you won't be added to any email lists that you're not already a part of)

If you're looking for some guidance or tips on what to contribute to, check back on the Hacktoberfest 2021 blog post.

You can always reach out on the Discord server, where we have a specific #hacktoberfest channel.

Loved by developers, used by thousands around the world!

One of the biggest benefits of using Umbraco is that we have the friendliest Open Source community on this planet. A community that's incredibly pro-active, extremely talented and helpful.

If you get an idea for something you would like to build in Umbraco, chances are that someone has already built it. And if you have a question, are looking for documentation or need friendly advice, go ahead and ask on the community forums.
