Written by Jacob Overgaard

It’s time to start on the final phase for the new backoffice project - Implementation. To succeed with this, we need the insights and skills from the Umbraco community and that’s why we’re opening the application for the new backoffice team. Maybe you’re just the person we’re looking for?

In the blog post published on March 3rd, I outlined what we have achieved so far on the backoffice project: Umbraco UI Library, Define the backoffice extension, and what the next phase is - Implementation. And for this next phase, we need you.

The Umbraco HQ CMS team is about to write and publish an RFC (Request For Comments) detailing how we are going to build the new backoffice and how that will affect the existing backoffice and the CMS as a whole.

We want to hit the right notes on this and this year we managed to hire a Product Owner for the core CMS team, Lasse Fredslund, who is going to help us do just that. BUT we also need a lot of help from you, the community. That means that we are going to revive the Backoffice Community Team — version 2.0!

Curious? Then please read on to find out what this team will be working on, what it takes to be part of the team, and how you can apply.

The road ahead for the new backoffice team

The first order of business for the team will be to review the RFC before it goes public to the rest of the community. Providing feedback, insights from past experiences, and inspiration for the future are the most important tasks for the team at this stage of the project.

Later on, the team will be involved in the actual implementation of the new backoffice.

A new team and a new team steward

I, Jacob Overgaard will take over the role as the team steward.

I started at Umbraco HQ in January 2022 as the Team Lead of the frontend team, so I am still quite new to all of this, but I look very much forward to be working with the community and the fantastic CMS team to build the long-awaited new backoffice.

As the steward, I will be:

  • Managing the team communication
  • Providing the necessary support to the team members
  • Coordinating with the rest of the HQ dev team and stewards of the other community teams.

A huge thank you goes out to the former steward, Mads Rasmussen, for taking things this far. Luckily, Mads will still be participating on the sideline with the rest of the Umbraco HQ CMS team.

Now for the team - are you intrigued?

We are looking for a variety of backgrounds and perspectives for the new backoffice team. If you can say yes to one or more of the following we’d be excited to get an application from you:

  • love making a great editor experience for you or your clients
  • have a passion for modern web development
  • want to review Umbraco HQ’s work during the development
  • have input to the direction to go in
  • want to volunteer some of your time to have a direct impact on the new backoffice

Overall the most important criteria are that you are passionate about Umbraco and are up for making the new backoffice as friendly as possible.

And please note that if you applied for the previous backoffice team, we’d love to see your application again! Maybe your knowledge is just what we need for this phase of the project.

What is expected from a team member?

There will be 1-2 virtual meetings per month. Each meeting will last no more than 1 hour depending on the topics and we will schedule the next meeting at the end of the session. There will be opportunities to get more involved later on and you might also have ideas for contributions to the project, but as a rule of thumb, we only expect the team members to commit to participating in the meetings.

Get your application in today!

Let us know if you are interested in becoming part of the Backoffice Team by filling out the online application. If you get an idea for something you would like to build in Umbraco, chances are that someone has already built it. And if you have a question, are looking for documentation or need friendly advice, go ahead and ask on the community forums.
