ArcelorMittal
From Sitecore to Umbraco: A future-proof solution
In need of a strong online presence
ArcelorMittal, one of the most entrepreneurial companies we’ve ever worked with, is the world’s leading steel and mining company. Their position to influence and innovate in the sector had never been stronger, but their online presence failed to reflect their newly launched purpose, ‘inventing smarter steels for a better world’.
This is why the problem they came to us with was an unusual one: now that they were the industry leader, what was next? One of the steps in the right direction was creating a modern website that could reflect their innovative mindset.
The technical limitations of their outdated Sitecore CMS and years of ad-hoc customisation had prevented the company from tying their services together. This led to fragmented user experience and made it nearly impossible to manage from a back-office perspective.
Creating a 21st-century website
Our goal was to help ArcelorMittal reposition themselves online for the market of the 21st century, reinvigorating their brand purpose and redefining their approach to content.
We needed to reimagine ArcelorMittal’s digital experience from the ground up. A comprehensive design system and rich interactive content experiences were the key elements of educating and informing users about the company’s commitment to demonstrate innovation in the sector. Moreover, data analytics uncovered that compelling future-focused stories and content were hidden within a confusing site architecture.
As part of this, we needed to retire the outdated Sitecore CMS platform and provide their content team with a simple, easy-to-use content editing experience that would help them showcase their purpose. When we proposed re-engineering the entire web estate onto Umbraco 8, we knew it would be a perfect fit.

Let Radley Yeldar tell the story from project brief to final product:
Pushing the limits with Umbraco 8
Our Agile approach to the project enabled our strategy, UX, creative and technical teams to design an experience that could tell engaging stories and display dynamic content from day one.
Pushing the creative limitations of Umbraco 8, we were able to design visual, interactive aspects that bring animations to life and work seamlessly to deliver subtle enhancements to the user experience.
A package worth sharing
From the back-end, we leveraged Umbraco 8’s infinite editing to make content entry as simple as possible. We developed an Environment Dashboard which has the ability to register and display the environment on dashboard and browser tabs.
Not only did this provide both our team and ArcelorMittal with visual cues, but we thought it so useful that we packaged it up and shared it with the Umbraco community!
We also delivered a robust hosting solution with third party community packages which integrate with Microsoft Azure and Autoscale so that the new website can respond to changes in demand.
The result: a future-proofed solution
The result is a modern, future-proofed website with rich informative hero content that’s able to handle peak load and grow along with ArcelorMittal’s growing business needs.
Launched this March, the website has already received extremely positive internal feedback. Now that it’s live, we look forward to working closely with the ArcelorMittal team to continuously optimise the site and prioritise recommendations for the next phase of work.
