2,200 kilometers of roads to maintain

ASFINAG is a major organization with a full bouquet of responsibilities that involve planning, financing, building, maintaining, operating and collecting toll on 2,200 kilometers of Austrian roads that include motorways and expressways.

Our client planned a complete rebuild of their website, a rebuild that would be based on their own cloud subscription on Microsoft Azure.

Meanwhile the design and concept were created on our previous collaboration with ASFINAG.

What we had to accomplish

We had to build and integrate several interfaces to support different systems for the client, such as the route planner, webcams and search for rest areas.

For CMS users, a two-factor authentication had to be implemented, which wasn't readily available at the start of the project.

Among other tasks, we had to make it possible for content editors to choose from a large number of available modules to create different pages. Plus, content also had to be delivered to the ASFINAG App.

Finally, a fallback solution in Azure had to be devised. So that in case one data centre went down, it would be possible to do an immediate change to support the website from an alternative data centre.

How we succeeded

External applications and interfaces were integrated in various ways, via iframe, backend service call or directly into the page. All content is near-real time and always up-to-date.

The content modules were created and organized to be combined in any way possible, so it's up to the editor to create exactly the page and layout they need.

"Working with kraftwerk and Umbraco has been a great experience for both the technical and the content management teams of our website. We can now manage all of our pages in one place and are very flexible in structuring our content with the modular solution."

Michaela Gold, Team Lead for Online, Internal Communication & Social Media, ASFINAG

Continuous integration into the test, staging and live environments was set up, so we could push code at any time, and also switch back to previous versions.

Based on an existing template, we created our own setup script for our desired Azure setup, which could be reproduced by the client at any time.

Multiple applications in one CMS

Because of Umbraco CMS proved flexibility and reliability, we integrated even more applications afterwards. For example, login pages for WIFI Hotspots along the highways, the ASFINAG blog, and the content for POS Screens in rest areas. All integrated into one CMS and maintained by a small number of editors.
