Migrating to Umbraco: ready for the future with a modern backend
Background
As part of AP Solutions GmbH, AVS Automotive VersicherungsService is one of the leading providers of automotive insurance solutions for the car trade, supporting over 1,200 dealership partners. AP Solutions GmbH is headquartered in Munich and is a subsidiary of Allianz Partners SAS.
AVS Automotive VersicherungsService offers an intuitively designed portal for car dealers, where they can easily generate and compare car insurance quotes for their customers – with just a few data entries. The portal has proven highly successful and is widely used.
However, its technical foundation – a .NET-based CMS – was becoming outdated. Upgrading to the latest version of the existing system was not an option: it had grown far beyond AVS’s needs and had become disproportionately expensive.
The decision was therefore made to migrate to a new CMS with minimal effort required from AVS.
Solution
The choice quickly fell on Umbraco CMS – for two main reasons. First, being an open-source system, it eliminated licensing costs. Second, it easily met all of AVS’s requirements.
Before development began, we reviewed the system in detail with the client and identified several obsolete functions that didn’t need to be migrated.
During the backend redevelopment, we held regular workshops to keep AVS informed about progress and to gather feedback early on. We also trained the client’s team to work confidently with the new CMS.
A crucial aspect of the project was data migration: using a self-developed migration tool, we ensured that all data was accurately transferred into the new portal – dealership locations, organizational structures, users, informational pages, and more.
After extensive testing by both AVS and our team, the new backend went live seamlessly.
Impact
With Umbraco, AVS Automotive VersicherungsService now has a modern, scalable foundation for its dealer portal. Not long after the migration, the first feature extensions were already implemented.
A new B2C product has also been built on top of the new backend: QCarCode® allows car dealership customers to compare insurance offers and accept quotes from the comfort of their own home. This gives AVS Automotive VersicherungsService yet another innovative solution to offer dealerships – one that simplifies their workflows and adds real value.
And all of this comes without any licensing costs!
