Gyldendal

From a complex and outdated system to the best editor experience available 🚀

Gyldendal, one of Norway's largest publishers, needed a new solution that portrays their position as the largest business in both teaching and legal data. Novicell NO said ''yes'' to the challenge and used Umbraco CMS to transform Gyldendal’s digital presence. Now, Gyldendal doesn’t run on a complex and outdated system. Instead, they have the best editor experience available 🙌 Novicell NO is here to tell you how they made it happen:

✅ Excellent editor experience  ✅ Agile architecture  ✅ Room for innovation

The way to a future-proof solution

Gyldendal - who are they 💪

Gyldendal Norsk Forlag AS is one of Norway's largest publishers and publishes a wide range of fiction, textbooks, teaching aids and general literature – both on paper and in electronic form. The publisher is aimed at individuals who buy books, public schools, lawyers who subscribe to comprehensive legal information, and many more!

First and foremost, Gyldendal is a production company where ARK is the reseller. Parts of the business also work directly towards the market. This applies to both teaching others and includes the legal source tool Rettsdata that sells digital solutions directly to the B2B market. Gyldendal's ambition is to maintain their position as the largest business in both teaching and legal data.

The goals 🔍

At the beginning of 2018, Gyldendal had a desire to move its entire website to a new CMS since their existing technology was outdated. This outdated CMS contained all of the content and product information, so Gyldendal started the project at record speed. Six different domains were to be transferred to the new CMS. Several challenges had to be solved:

👉 Desire and need for an updated platform

👉 Better and more robust architecture

👉 New modern technology that put the user in focus – all the way

👉 More room for innovation and further development

The process 🔧

To ensure an agile and flexible architecture that would support both the need for supporting existing systems and the introduction of new technology over time, the focus was on microservices with Umbraco as the chosen CMS. This architecture ensured fewer dependencies with both the ongoing and future projects whether it be DAM, PIM, e-commerce etc. In this context, Umbraco is a great choice as it is a great CMS - and only that. It does not aim to provide PIM, marketing automation etc - just a solid and stable CMS.

What we achieved 🎉

Gyldendal has all their websites now running on Umbraco, with data flowing both from older systems that are to be depreciated over time and new systems that are introduced. With the use of microservice, Gyldendal now has a future proof architecture that will support upcoming development and new challenges. The editors have moved from a complex and outdated system to the best editor experience available. This does not only makes it easier for the editors, but it also makes the content and user experience great since the sites are always updated
