The Swedish Veterinary Institute (SVA)

From Outdated to Outstanding: SVA’s Digital Upgrade with Umbraco

SVA needed a modern, flexible web solution to replace an outdated platform that limited both content management and scalability. By rebuilding the site in Umbraco, with Igloo and Umbraco Commerce as the foundation, they now have a stable, efficient, and easy-to-manage platform. The result is faster editorial workflows, improved performance, and a structure that better supports their public health mission.

Background

The Swedish Veterinary Institute (SVA) faced growing limitations with their outdated website, built on an older version of Umbraco. The platform was difficult to maintain and lacked the flexibility needed to manage expanding content around research, diseases, and news. Editors relied on developers for even simple updates, creating delays and inefficiencies.
The existing e-commerce setup contributed to higher hosting costs than necessary, and the dedicated Umbraco Cloud solution no longer matched their actual performance needs. For an institute with a critical public health role, delivering accurate and timely information is essential. SVA needed a modern, stable solution that enabled faster content management, improved cost-efficiency, and better supported their mission.

Solution

To meet SVA’s needs, we built a modern website hosted on Umbraco Cloud for performance and maintainability. Using the Igloo starter kit, we created flexible components tailored to SVA’s workflows. Editors now manage content more efficiently with our Dynamic Content tool, which enables tagging, filtering, and dynamic listings.
Umbraco Commerce was implemented as the new e-commerce solution. Several custom integrations were implemented: product data is retrieved from internal registries, press releases are automatically imported from an external news system via API, and research projects are synced from a separate research database. The solution streamlines data flow and reduces manual editorial work.

Impact

The new website has streamlined SVA’s editorial workflows, allowing editors to update and publish content independently without relying on developers for routine tasks. This has reduced turnaround times and improved internal efficiency. The improved structure and tagging system make it easier for users to find information on diseases, research, and news.
By moving from a dedicated Umbraco Cloud server to a standardized hosting plan, SVA now benefits from lower costs, simplified maintenance, and better scalability. With flexible components, powerful integrations, and a more intuitive CMS, SVA has a future-ready platform that supports both operational needs and public communication.

“For SVA, the top priority is to have a stable website with up-to-date and accurate information. We chose to build a number of flexible components, which gives editors the freedom to create and present content for different scenarios. It feels like the right way to go. At the same time, we have reduced the solution to a more lightweight application with standardized technology, which makes it more secure and easier to maintain.”
