Unveiling Umbraco MCP Server
The AI Interface for Actionable Content Management

With Umbraco MCP, generative AI tools can go beyond suggesting ideas. They can now act on your behalf, within the boundaries you define, to help you manage and optimize your Umbraco project.
“This isn’t just about adding AI to Umbraco. It’s about making Umbraco accessible to AI. By opening up our management APIs through a standard protocol, we’re enabling a new kind of collaboration, one that helps people get more value from promising technology, safely and on their terms.”
Filip Bech-Larsen, CTO, Umbraco
What Is Umbraco MCP Server?
Umbraco MCP is a standardized interface that allows AI tools to read, understand, and perform actions on your Umbraco project. It’s built using the emerging Model Context Protocol specification, pioneered by Anthropic, and wraps around Umbraco’s Management API.

With Umbraco MCP, your AI assistant becomes more than a chatbot; it becomes an interface to execute real tasks like updating content, adjusting product pricing, or suggesting A/B tests. All actions are securely scoped using the existing Umbraco permission model.
A Natural Extension of the Umbraco Platform
We believe in putting you in control. Umbraco MCP isn’t a layer added on top of the UI. It’s an extension of what already makes Umbraco strong:
-
Predictable, well-documented APIs
-
Granular permission controls
-
A rich developer experience
-
A vibrant open-source ecosystem
Rather than reinventing the interface or bolting on generative AI to check a box, we’re enabling AI tools to connect to Umbraco through the same trusted foundations you already use, via API users (released with Umbraco 15) and the management API (released in Umbraco 14). This provides the context and ability to take action.
Umbraco MCP originated in the community, with multiple developers independently prototyping their own approaches. We’re proud to officially adopt and support this initiative, ensuring a long-term commitment, stability, support, and alignment with the Umbraco ecosystem.

What Can It Do?
In the Codegarden demo, we showed how AI clients using Umbraco MCP can:
-
Create and update content using natural language prompts
-
Adjust product pricing and add descriptions dynamically in Umbraco Commerce
-
Read logs and surface warnings, including deprecated properties
Inspect document types and architecture to support implementers

These aren’t just concepts, they’re working examples that hint at a much broader potential.
Why It Matters
This second wave of AI, agentic AI, extends beyond content generation. It’s about enabling trusted AI tools to collaborate with your CMS in meaningful ways:
“Umbraco MCP allows you to turn an AI client or service of your choice into a strategic advisor. With access to context, content, and architecture, it can help make intelligent, data-driven decisions. And it can actually execute them as well.”
Filip Bech-Larsen, CTO, Umbraco
With Umbraco MCP, AI can help editors maintain and update content, support developers in debugging and optimization, and empower marketers with real-time insights and automation. And it all happens within your control.
What’s Next?
We’re still in the early days of Umbraco MCP. For now:
-
It runs locally via an AI client like Claude (the client has to support MCP), using your own MCP server setup
-
Deployment models, distribution options, and further ecosystem integration are being explored as the standard matures.
-
As protocol adoption grows, broader client support will follow. Both OpenAI and Gemini have announced upcoming support
While our current focus isn’t on embedding AI directly into the Umbraco UI, we continue to explore where thoughtfully integrated AI features might add value in the future.
As part of this ongoing work, we’re also exploring how the Umbraco MCP Server may interact with the Umbraco package ecosystem, starting with official add-ons, and surface additional capabilities that AI agents can act on.
How to Get Started
You can already explore and experiment with Umbraco MCP Server today:
-
Read more about Umbraco’s AI strategy
-
Review the protocol at mcp.so
-
Access the current source code and setup instructions on GitHub
Umbraco MCP Server opens up new ways to collaborate with AI, not just as a feature, but as an extension of the platform you already trust. As the protocol matures and client support grows, entirely new workflows, assistants, and automation opportunities will emerge.
We’re excited to work with the community, partners, and customers to explore what’s possible and to make Umbraco the most open and flexible CMS platform for AI.
