Umbraco and AI

Flexible Foundation for an AI Future

Enabling flexible, future-proof digital experiences with AI on your terms.

Umbraco

Our AI Strategy

The strength of Umbraco has always been its ability to empower developers and digital agencies with a flexible, open CMS platform, built to support how you want to build. The same principles guide our approach to AI: not as a prescriptive layer, but as a set of powerful tools you can integrate and control.

We believe AI should work for you, not the other way around. That’s why we’re focusing on enabling seamless, optional integrations, giving you the freedom to explore AI use cases where they make sense and deliver real value.

Filip Bech-Larsen, CTO, Umbraco

We see AI as an opportunity to extend Umbraco’s flexibility, not restrict it. By focusing on standards, openness, and developer choice, we’re making sure AI fits into the workflows and solutions you want to build.

— Filip Bech-Larsen, CTO, Umbraco

AI Is About Adding Value

Umbraco’s native extensibility, well-documented APIs, and intuitive developer experience make it easy to integrate the AI tools and services that best fit your project.

Whether you're enhancing personalization, automating workflows, enriching content, or building intelligent search and recommendation systems, Umbraco offers a trusted and predictable foundation for AI-enabled digital experiences.

How You Can Use AI in Umbraco Today

If you’re curious to explore how AI can enhance the Umbraco editing experience, the Umbraco Marketplace is a great place to start.

You’ll find a growing collection of ready-to-use packages that bring AI into your Umbraco projects, offering capabilities like content generation, image analysis, language translation, metadata enrichment, and more.

It’s perfect for experimenting or adding real value to your project with minimal setup. One of the things we love about the Umbraco ecosystem is how quickly and creatively it embraces new technologies.

Umbraco MCP Server

Umbraco MCP Server is an officially supported, open-source tool that connects AI clients to Umbraco using the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

The Umbraco MCP Server acts as a bridge between AI tools and the Umbraco Management API. This allows AI clients to read, understand, and perform real actions inside Umbraco. AI agents can update content, configure A/B tests, adjust product pricing, inspect document types, and even surface technical warnings, all through natural language interactions. Access is controlled securely through Umbraco’s existing permission model.

Rather than layering new AI features directly into the CMS, Umbraco MCP Server extends the existing platform architecture to make Umbraco accessible to AI, providing powerful new ways to collaborate with AI tools while keeping you in full control. Get the full story here.

What Does the Future Hold?

We believe we’ve seen the first wave of AI in content management, focusing on generative tools like text and image creation, translation, and automated alt-text. Now, a second wave is emerging: one that goes beyond content assistance and enables AI to act on behalf of users, automating tasks, optimizing experiences, and interacting directly with the CMS through APIs.

This aligns with Umbraco’s strengths. We provide the foundational APIs and architecture that let developers build AI agents that collaborate with the CMS, not just extend it.

FAQ

Not directly. Umbraco is a flexible platform that supports AI integrations via packages, APIs, and standards, but we’ve chosen not to embed AI features natively (yet), to ensure openness and user control, and compliance.

Start with the Umbraco Marketplace. There are several ready-made packages that let you explore generative AI, image analysis, and more.

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI tools understand and act on structured data in predictable ways. We’ve contributed to an open-source project that enables MCP support in Umbraco, allowing AI clients to work directly with the CMS via its Management API. See more on Umbraco MCP Server here.

We’re actively exploring what makes sense for our users and ecosystem. For now, our focus is on enabling integration, experimentation, and community-driven innovation.
