Umbraco

Web Accessibility Features

WCAG compliant

There are no constraints on what you build with Umbraco. Whether you’re using the built-in templating engine, a headless approach, or something entirely different, Umbraco gives you the freedom to approach accessibility in the way you need to fulfill requirements.

Customizable workflows

You get a wide range of tools to configure and customize workflows in Umbraco out-of-the-box.  Mandatory properties such as image ALT text are easy to set up. You can enable complex validation with custom validation messages. How about setting up an approval workflow or scheduled publishing? It’s all doable.

The open nature of Umbraco’s API layer makes it possible to integrate with third-party tools of your choice to add anything from automated accessibility tests, trigger external applications, send emails, and much much more.

And with a vibrant community providing a number of packages for integrations and workflows you can find both inspiration and productivity boosters in the package section as well.

Accessible for developers and editors

We have a community team working with the sole purpose of making the Umbraco Backoffice comply with WCAG 2.0 Level AA. This team has been hard at work on implementing these accessibility features to allow developers with disabilities to work with Umbraco.

Umbraco already provides a high level of accessibility and accessibility is thought into all things we do going forward. With an increased focus on accessibility in general, an ever-expanding test-suite for anything from color contrast to readability, and a vigilant community (and dedicated community team) keeping an eye on this, Umbraco can be confident in delivering a high standard of accessibility.

Structured headers & tables

Umbraco allows for full control over the mark-up for elements such as headings and tables and can easily be configured to allow editors to work with these in an intuitive way.

It is easy to set up useful limitations such as only having a single H1 on a page, ensuring that editors can choose between different types of headlines to provide good copy structure, and making these look and perform exactly as you need.

Umbraco Richtext Editor is highly configurable and if tables are allowed (yes, you decide this) the output can be configured to comply with requirements.

Image ALT text

Providing the ability to add ALT text for images uploaded to the Media Library is a breeze. If needed, you can make the ALT text mandatory and ensure this is filled out before the image can be used. You can add the ability to override a default ALT text and adjust it to the context it’s being used in.

Control over all colors

You can add features for selecting colors from palettes or a list of sensible (and accessible) defaults - you’re in charge of when and where colors can be changed. Whether it’s the color of a button, a header background, or ensuring text is readable, you decide how much freedom should be given to editors and what parameters they can choose from.
