uProfile November 2024 - Rick Butterfield

A serious sustainability specialist!

Written by: Rick Butterfield

Rick Butterfield is a name many in the Umbraco Community recognize, and for good reason! With over 14 years of experience working with Umbraco, Rick has become a champion for sustainability in the digital space. He's a keen community contributor; speaking at events, coding packages and becoming a key member of a Community Team, all of which has lead to him being a two-time Umbraco MVP.

Long time user, first time contributor

I’ve been using Umbraco since 2011 in my first ever web dev job at a housing association, but only really started to get involved in the community in 2020! I gave the first .NET Core version of Umbraco (Unicore as it was known at the time) a go during lockdown and blogged about it, and then that blog got a mention on umbraCoffee!

After that things kind of snowballed. I started with talking about it more on social media. I joined the community Slack workspace and then moved over to Umbraco Community Discord. I just started getting involved with whatever I could really, making friends and having conversations.

I went to my first meetup (shout out the Umbraco Manchester Meetup) when things were online in 2021 and then started attending in person in 2023.

One opportunity led to another

After attending the Manchester Meetup and finding the Community online, I began to get more and more involved, plucking up the courage to contribute and share knowledge with others.

There are three main ways that I spend my time contributing to the Community: speaking, sustainability and packages! After my first in person meetup back in 2023, I had already worked on a talk internally at the company I was working at called “Decarbonising the planet, one Umbraco upgrade at a time”, which was all about the sustainability benefits you would get going from Umbraco v8 to v9 and the underlying .NET change.

I then took this talk to the Manchester and Newcastle meetups, and then to Umbraco Spark, which was well received by the audience. During Spark I met Umbraco’s CMS Product Owner Lasse Fredslund, and we had a great in-depth talk about sustainability and the fact that Umbraco wanted to launch a Community Sustainability Team later that year.

The rest, as they say, is history! I’ve been part of the Community Sustainability Team since it's launch and I've had so many cool opportunities, like visiting Fjernvarme Fyn and Energinet in Denmark, organising a sustainability challenge and sending an Umbraco-branded bike all the way to Edinburgh!

This year (2024), I was really honoured to be able to speak at Codegarden. This talk was all about, you guessed it, sustainability; looking at the really practical ways in which you can decrease the carbon footprint of your digital presence.

The third main way I’m involved is building packages. In early 2023 I also launched a package, BlockPreview, that lets you show rich previews of content in the Umbraco backoffice without having to write AngularJS or Web Components for every one of your blocks, which is so much fun to work on and maintain—it’s probably the thing I talk to people most about at events! I’ve also been able to work on the Sustainability package with my Community Team colleague Thomas Morris, and I’m very proud to say both these packages have had v14 and v15 support from day one of their respective releases!

Treasured memories

Receiving the coveted MVP Award in 2023 has to be one of my most treasured memories! I was really honoured to be awarded it—and to have it renewed for a second time this year—and I count it as one of the biggest highlights of my career so far. Plus this year I got accepted to speak at Codegarden in 2024 all about sustainability (and I found out on my birthday!!). Alongside this I think being able to chat to people about the BlockPreview package, hear how much clients love it and gather some great ideas for future features is amazing. Knowing that the hard work and time I have put into community contributions is helping others, makes it all worth it.

Community-Work-Life Balance

I have had a bit of a shift recently, work-wise, since I started working at Umbraco Platinum Partner Wattle as we deal primarily with member organisations and Dynamics 365 which is a whole new kettle of fish for me!

Looking ahead; I’ve always heard great things about CODECABIN and would love to make it there sometime very soon. I’m continuing to work on BlockPreview and the Sustainability package as much as I can and I’m planning to submit BlockPreview for an Umbraco Award next year. I would love to be renewed as an MVP for the third time, so I'm continuing my work to contribute to the community.

I’m definitely going to be exploring the Green Software Foundation’s “Impact Framework” after hearing a phenomenal talk from their Executive Director, Asim Hussain at the 2024 Umbraco UK Fest. It would be awesome to see if our Sustainability Team can somehow get involved in open sourcing carbon measurements.

Why I've stuck around for the Community stuff

It’s the cliché thing to say but it’s the friendly people! Being able to have this one thing in common with people no matter where in the world you might end up at a conference or meetup, you’ll have something to chat about.

Every time I get to go to something and see the Umbraco community, I’m reminded why I wanted to get involved in the first place as I catch up with friends far and wide, and give myself the chance to make new ones!

How can you get involved?

Firstly: I’d say just throw yourself in wherever you can! We’re a Friendly community and so no matter which event, meetup or Discord discussion you join you are going to find a bunch of friendly people! Don’t hesitate to ask questions or share what you’re working on.

Secondly: have a play around with the CMS source code! One of the best things that’s helped me understand Umbraco better is pulling apart the source code and learning how it works under the hood.

Thirdly: build in public, blog, share what you know and care about! I always love reading what people have to say about their experience with Umbraco and its community, and will read most things that pop up on UMB.FYI every week to get a more well rounded understanding of what’s going on. You have something to share, and a different perspective on things than anyone else, and the world needs to hear that.

A few things you might not know about me...

  • Not unexpected or secret, but I play the drums! Have played for about 15 years now, but haven’t picked up my sticks in more than 6 months so I’m a little bit rusty.
  • I started running back in June with Couch to 5K, and can now do a 26 minute 5K!
  • I'm currently repeat playing Sam Fender's new single "People Watching".
  • I love a good slice of pizza and it doesn't get any better than an authentic slice of New York pizza, so I had to have it when I visited NYC! This would have to be one of my most memorable meals! 🍕
