Ahold Delhaize

Turning Cyber Security Training into a Collaborative Digital Experience

Ahold Delhaize wanted cybersecurity training employees would take part in, not click through. Spinbox and Clarity built the Living Data Arcade on Umbraco: one hub of timed escape room games where individuals and teams practice spotting phishing, securing passwords and identifying threats, with leaderboards and secure access built in.

Background

The goal:

To create a learning experience that would go beyond conventional online training. The objective was to improve engagement while encouraging employees to work together, solve problems and strengthen their understanding of cyber security risks.

The experience would immerse players in the story of Zoe and Bert, whose mission was to protect the organisation from cyber threats. Employees would work through a series of timed challenges designed to test their knowledge and decision-making under pressure.

The platform needed to:

*Provide secure access for employees and approved brand associates

*Support multiple participants playing simultaneously

*Allow team-based gameplay with a designated team leader

*Deliver a sequence of interactive cyber security puzzles

*Create a memorable learning experience that encouraged participation and engagement

*Provide a scalable foundation for future training initiatives

Solution

Spinbox developed a centralised digital learning platform built around a collection of gamified cyber security experiences.

The project builds on Ahold Delhaize's Living Data programme, which was established to improve cyber security awareness through engaging, digital-first learning experiences.

As remote working became more common, the organisation needed a way to continue delivering effective training to employees across multiple locations.

Working with assets and creative concepts supplied by Clarity, Spinbox delivered a suite of escape room-style games that challenged employees to apply their cyber security knowledge in realistic scenarios. Players could compete individually or as part of a team while learning about key topics such as password security, phishing awareness and cyber threat identification.

As the programme evolved, Spinbox developed the Living Data Arcade, a central hub bringing together:

*Access to all cyber security games and challenges

*Team and individual participation

*Competitive leaderboards

*Training content management through Umbraco

*Secure user access and authentication

*A scalable framework for future game releases and content updates

Impact

The Living Data Arcade gave Ahold Delhaize a single destination for cyber security awareness and employee engagement.

By combining learning with teamwork, competition and storytelling, the platform helps employees actively participate in cyber security training rather than passively consuming content.

The escape room format creates a more memorable experience, helping reinforce key security concepts while encouraging collaboration across teams.

The result is a sustainable digital learning platform that can continue to grow alongside the organisation's cyber security awareness programme, supporting new content, new challenges and future employee engagement initiatives.

Key Benefits:

*Centralised cyber security learning platform

*Interactive escape room-style training experiences

*Team-based collaboration and competitive gameplay

*Secure access for employees and approved participants

*Scalable framework for future games and learning content

*Improved engagement through gamification and storytelling
