Background
For ARoS, the visit starts long before guests walk through the museum doors. The website needs to inspire people to visit, help them plan their day and make it easy to find the information they need.
After ARoS introduced a new visual identity, it was time to rethink the website too. The museum wanted a digital extension of the physical experience – one that could showcase the art in all its visual impact while remaining fast, accessible and easy to use for everyone.
Solution
Together with Illumi, ARoS created a new website built on Umbraco CMS, with the guest journey at the centre of the experience.
Opening hours, current exhibitions and ticket information are easy to find, while the new Plan Your Visit feature lets guests choose a date, see what is happening at the museum and create a programme for their day. Opening hours and exhibition statuses are updated automatically, reducing the amount of manual work for the editorial team.
The new website also gives ARoS greater editorial freedom. A flexible range of content elements makes it possible to create engaging experiences around exhibitions, podcasts, video and other content – while giving the museum the freedom to adapt as visitor interests and digital trends change.
At the same time, the new visual identity has been translated into a digital experience. Exhibition pages can use colours that match the physical exhibition spaces, creating a stronger connection between the digital and physical visit. Large images and visual content have also been carefully adapted to work across devices.
Impact
The new website gives ARoS a digital experience that extends the museum visit before, during and beyond the physical visit. Guests can find key information more easily, plan their day and explore the art and exhibitions in a way that works for them.
For ARoS, the Umbraco-based solution makes it easier to keep essential information up to date and create new types of content without compromising the overall experience. Automated opening hours and exhibition statuses reduce manual editorial work, while the flexible content setup gives the museum room to evolve the website over time.
The result is a website where aesthetics and functionality work together – bringing the atmosphere, visual identity and art of ARoS to life online without compromising usability.

“We wanted a digital extension of the physical experience our visitors have at ARoS – both in terms of branding, reflecting our visual identity, and in terms of the whole atmosphere of the building and the art itself. With the new website, the art can come to life in a really user-friendly way.”
