British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA)

A new Umbraco website at the heart of a connected member experience

Cantarus, an Umbraco Platinum Partner that specializes in associations and membership organizations, rebuilt the British Equine Veterinary Association’s (BEVA) aging DNN website as a mobile-first Umbraco platform designed to meet WCAG 2.2 AA standards. The project connected BEVA’s website, CRM, member portal, app and online community into one member experience, cut the CRM database by 57% and reduced membership price points from 154 to 45.

Background

BEVA’s digital platforms had evolved independently, creating a fragmented experience across its website, CRM, member portal, app and community.

The ageing DNN CMS lacked flexible templates, publishing controls and an effective content taxonomy, making the website difficult for BEVA’s small team to manage and increasingly challenging for members to navigate. Manual processes, unreliable self-service tools and complex membership and event pricing added further operational pressure.

BEVA therefore needed a modern, integrated platform that could make information easier to find, reduce administrative complexity and support the organisation’s long-term digital strategy.

Solution

Cantarus implemented a connected digital ecosystem built around MemConnect, bringing BEVA’s website, CRM, member portal, mobile app and online community together into one cohesive member experience. The legacy DNN website was replaced with a flexible, mobile-first Umbraco CMS platform, supported by a new user-led information architecture, shared content taxonomy, reusable components and editorial approval workflows. This made information easier for members to find while giving BEVA’s small team greater control and consistency when creating and publishing content.

The new Umbraco website formed part of a wider connected digital ecosystem that significantly simplified BEVA’s content, data and membership operations. Alongside replacing the ageing DNN CMS with a more flexible and accessible publishing platform, the transformation reduced the CRM database by 57%, retaining only active and valuable data, while membership price points were streamlined from 154 to 45. This reduced unnecessary complexity for BEVA’s team and created a cleaner, more manageable foundation for delivering joined-up digital experiences to members.

Impact

The new Umbraco website gives BEVA a more accessible, manageable and consistent digital platform. A redesigned information architecture and shared content taxonomy make resources easier for members to find, while reusable templates, components and approval workflows give BEVA’s small editorial team greater control over publishing. Designed mobile-first to meet WCAG 2.2 AA standards, the website launched alongside the new member portal, CRM and updated app without requiring a rollback or maintenance page. The wider transformation also reduced the CRM database by 57% and simplified membership price points from 154 to 45, creating a more efficient digital ecosystem that BEVA can continue to develop as its members’ needs evolve.

“Our goal wasn’t simply to replace technology. We wanted to make it easier for busy equine professionals to find the information they needed, while giving BEVA a platform that would continue evolving alongside its members.”

"The biggest difference for us is how much easier the CRM feels to work with. It doesn’t feel intimidating for non-technical users, and we have much more control over things like renewals, events and automated emails ourselves. It's also far easier to adapt and integrate with other systems without every change becoming a major development project. For a small team, that makes a huge difference."
