Enhancing digital access for staff and users at Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust

Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust needed more than day-to-day platform support, they needed a partner to improve how people access and use critical information. By enhancing accessibility, redesigning key user journeys and introducing AI-powered search, we created a faster, clearer and more user-focused experience across their intranet and extranet platforms.

Background

Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust provides integrated health and social care services to around 765,000 people across Hull, the East Riding of Yorkshire, Scarborough, Whitby and Ryedale. Their services span mental health, community care, learning disability support, addiction services and primary care, supported by around 3,000 staff working across more than 70 sites.

The trust needed a new partner to take over the management of their business-critical Umbraco intranet and extranet platforms. They were looking for a team that could manage the day-to-day running of the sites while providing ongoing support, improving structure and making it easier for staff and external users to find information and use the platforms effectively.

Solution

The work focuses on keeping the platforms reliable and accessible, while making practical improvements that reflect how staff and users actually use them.

In the first year, this included:

  • Auditing and updating the websites to meet WCAG 2.2 AA standards, helping make the platforms accessible to a wider range of users

  • Redesigning the intranet and main homepage to support a clearer, more user‑focused structure

  • Adding AI‑powered search across both platforms, making it quicker for users to find the information they need

  • Prototyping a new leaflet library to improve access to documents and patient information

Impact

The changes have led to clear improvements in how people use the platforms:

  • Staff can find key information more quickly, reducing time spent searching

  • The clearer homepage structure makes it easier for users to understand where to go

  • Accessibility improvements mean the sites work better for a wider range of users

“Our intranet and website platforms are essential tools for both staff and the communities we serve. What is important to me is having a partner that understands the realities of working in the NHS. The team have taken a collaborative and user focused approach, supporting us with both the day-to-day running of the platforms and the ongoing development and improvement of the site.”
